April Chicken News

I haven't been a very good blogger lately. It has a little to do with the house sale and a little to do with there not really being a whole lot of chicken news.

The chickens are slowly getting bigger. Molly's wattles are starting to come in. Miss Marans has a tiny comb. There are no signs of egg laying as yet.

Lately they have been engaging in little chicken fights. They both puff up and fly at each other flapping their wings. It's over very quickly. Sometimes Miss Marans will do that at poor Sparky. He's alarmed and bewildered and runs away. Poor kitty. He just wants to get along.

It occurred to me last week that I don't have to enclose the whole side yard in order to put the chickens in there. A smallish chicken tractor is now in the works 3' wide by 5' long by 4' high. I'll be able to move it up and down the side yard when the mood strikes. Since that yard is so narrow I will only be able to access the front of the enclosure, so I need to be able to get to the very back easily. the current design is chalet style, but I'm considering going to a box shape which might be easier to build without a chop saw. I won't know for sure until I buy the lumber.

I'm also going to get some plastic poultry fence so I can make a portable enclosure. Then I can take the ladies out to the front yard or down to my community garden plot.

Oh yeah, I got the Commander out of the pokey. Now it's down at the shop with a mystery fuel issue. I think it's time to send it to the great RV park in the sky but I'm not sure how to do that. No rush I guess.
